Pantone has been setting color standards for publications, designers and artists for years, but in 2000 the company’s Pantone Color Institute began sharing the results of its trends analysis and naming a “color of the year.” Since then, clothing and home décor designers, style-savvy shoppers, and brides-to-be have been looking to Pantone’s Color of the Year for inspiration.
For 2018, that color is ultra violet. It’s a blue-based shade that Pantone says “suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now.” It’s a lovely sentiment and a lovely color for a wedding!
More intense than lavender, but not as forceful as purple, ultra violet is imbued with an almost mystical quality that makes it feel meditative and relaxing. It’s showing up in weddings in big ways ⸺ bridesmaid dresses, invitations, tablecloths ⸺ and as a subtle accent ⸺ think bouquet ribbons or the groom’s socks! This soothing color could be an ideal antidote to wedding day anxiety.
Florists are particularly pleased with this year’s winning color as there are a wide range of ultra violet flower choices: orchids, verbena, pansies, heather … and, well, violets. The list of beautiful options goes on and on.
